McDowell ARH Hospital opened March 27, 1956, as one of the original nine Miners Memorial Hospital Association facilities. Located in McDowell, Ky., the 25-bed critical access hospital primarily serves the residents of Floyd, Knott and Pike counties in Kentucky. Named in 2022 as one of the National Rural Health Association’s Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals, it offers a variety of services including endocrinology, outpatient health, obstetrics, acute rehabilitation and senior care. Additionally, it operates five clinics and a retail pharmacy. McDowell ARH also offers skilled nursing “swing beds,” which provide an opportunity for patients to transition from observation to acute care to extended-stay post-acute care without changing rooms. Skilled nursing through swing bed care typically lasts 7 to 21 days, as the goal is to prepare patients for a return home.
